NLP Techniques For Parents: Reading Your Child’s Emotional State

NLP Techniques For Parents: Reading Your Child’s Emotional State

By Rachael Mah

Your children aren’t always going to come to you when they are struggling. As they grow up, they may be more likely to try to deal with things on their own or stuff them inside. They may feel too embarrassed to come to you for guidance.

It can be helpful if you are aware when your child is in a specific emotional state. There is a technique in NLP called calibration and it is a great tool when it comes to doing just that.

Calibration is very useful for the following reasons:

• By using it you will know if your child has a different emotional reaction to an old situation
• You will know whether the other NLP tools you have used are working
• You will know when your child encounters a new situation that brings about the same emotional state

Using calibration is very easy and takes just some observation. When your child is in a certain emotional state, observe everything you can. Let’s consider the example of test anxiety in your child. You must observe how your child is when in that state of anxiety. To do so, make a mental note of everything about your child.

This could be his rate of breathing, the rate of his speech, his tone of voice, the way he holds his body, or anything else that stands out as being significant. You must also make sure to observe your child in a normal emotional state or in a positive emotional state so you can easily tell the difference between that and the undesirable emotional state.

Once you know these signs you will then be able to observe your child each time he is going to take a test at school. As you work with him with the other NLP techniques you will be able to watch him as he becomes more and more comfortable with taking tests.

Calibration is also useful because you will know when your child has anxiety about a different or new situation, such as trying out for a sports team, going on his first job interview, or anything else that might occur. This is especially helpful if your child is not the type to come and talk to you about his feelings and concerns.
